Without Unions There is No Social Democracy – The Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s Perception of the Task of Unions WorldWide
A union’s ability to represent workers’ interests is a fundamental democratic right. For a significant portion of the population, this provides the ability to contribute to shaping the economic, social and political development, particularly in terms of humane work and social justice. Without unions there is no Social Democracy!
Our international cooperation with labor unions strengthens Social Democracy worldwide. We closely coordinate our projects with the unions of the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB). Decades of experience and a worldwide network of offices make the Friedrich Ebert Foundation a unique partner for the international union movement.
Our work ensures that union interests and positions are presented and included in political and economic decision making processes on the national, regional and global level.
Unions, works councils and other organizations for labor policy advocacy can realize their potential only if they are representative, democratic, independent, competent and effective. One of the core tasks of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation is to support the efforts of unions to reach these goals.
FES cross cutting concern for a democracy that lives up to the pretensions of social justice leads to a special emphasis on strong and responsible trade unions. Representing the German Trade Union Movement abroad, FES aims at empowering the Indonesian Trade Unions to represent their members’ interests in Indonesia and abroad. Only with strong trade unions, an adequate share of profits between owners/shareholders and workers can be achieved. Therefore trade unions have to have a strong organizational basis and a strategic perspective to turn industrial relationships into decent and mutually beneficial ones for owners and workers. Apart from the sector specific work of Trade Unions, they also have a crucial role to play in national and international policy processes. FES tries to facilitate processes of political consolidation of the Indonesian Trade Union movement, resulting in joint Indonesian trade union policies. This includes building up their capacity as an equal partner in bipartite and tripartite social dialogue to contribute to constructive social partnership.
